G.O.A.T.

I am a CPS Social Worker... I'm not proud of this. What I am proud of is the difference I make in the lives of children and families. What I am proud of is the children and families I reunite in spite of my own agency. How I consider my job is best exemplified in the following story (many of you have probably heard it): A guy’s walking down a long beach in the aftermath of a severe storm. The length of the beach, miles long, is strewn with starfish destined to a sunny death. This guy comes upon another guy hard at work. He watches him pick up a starfish and throw it as far as he can into the sea. He watches the guy walk leisurely up the beach and randomly pick up another starfish and launch it to salvation as well. The first guy walks up to the second guys and inquires: “why bother? There’s no way you can save all of them!” The second guy bends, picks up another starfish and heaves it into the ocean before responding: “Saved that one.” - GOAT (“Government Outcast Awaiting Termination”)

It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad Agency!

This irony has only recently occurred to me...we in CPS work extensively with victims as well as perpetrators of domestic violence...I've wondered about the motivations of my colleagues at the "front end" of the agency (investigators, mostly women), and the frightening truth is...they possess the same power-and-control issues as do the perpetrators of DV...SCARY!...
